| Introduction |

Given the strong growth forecasts for the nanotechnology market over the next five to ten years, nanotechnology research and development is a key priority across Europe and the UK.
The Kroto Research Campus was formed in 2005 and comprises two prestigious new centres, the Kroto Research Institute and the Nanoscience and Technology Centre. Together with a third building (allowing for expansion), these centres comprise over 18,000 square metres in what is believed to the UK's largest dedicated multi-disciplinary research facility covering the following themes:
- Electronic nanotechnology
- Environmental engineering science
- Future generation materials
- Nanocharacterisation and nanomanipulation
- Soft nanotechnology
- Tissue engineering and modelling
- Virtual Reality
The Kroto Research Campus, supported by Nobel Prize winner Professor Sir Harold Kroto, is part of The University of Sheffield, one of Europe’s leading universities for commercial research collaborations. The University of Sheffield has previously implemented dedicated research facilities with both Boeing and Rolls Royce, and has collaborated on specific research projects with numerous global organisations including GlaxoSmithKline, Proctor and Gamble, ICI, Mitsubishi Machinery, Novartis and Shell. We are now seeking to enhance our commercial activities by partnering with leading international technology companies within a number of these themes.
